Nearly all my class “units” use a familiar nursery rhyme, “Jack and Jill.”  The intent is to use something familiar to students as they learn and apply some of the concepts.  Learning about plot pacing and structure isn’t as fun as figuring out why Jack and Jill went up that hill in the first place. They’re the same thing. It’s just one way of learning is a pain and the other interesting.

For reference, here is a version of the poem.

Jack and Jill went up the hill
To fetch a pail of water;
Jack fell down and broke his crown
And Jill came tumbling after.

(Added later)

Up Jack got and home did trot,
As fast as he could caper;
Went to bed to mend his head
With vinegar and brown paper.

Jill came in and she did grin
To see his paper plaster;
Mother, vex’d, did whip her next
For causing Jack's disaster.
